WLD 132 GTAW (TIG) Plate/Pipe

Lecture: 1 Lab: 6 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3

This course is designed to enhance skills with the gas tungsten arc (TIG) welding process. Topics include setup, joint preparation, and electrode selection with emphasis on manipulative skills in all welding positions on plate and pipe. Upon completion, students should be able to perform GTAW welds with prescribed electrodes and filler materials on various joint geometry.

Pre-requisite(s): WLD 131 .
Course is typically offered in Summer.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Exhibit proper safety behavior in a welding environment within acceptable tolerances according to ANSI Z.49.1. (Safety in welding and cutting and allied processes.)
  2. Apply practical and theoretical knowledge of GTAW pipe welding including equipment, processes, procedures, electrodes and quality control, on a written test with a score of 80 or above.
  3. Produce acceptable 6G test position groove welds on 6” schedule 80 mild steel pipe, using the GTAW process, that pass API 1104 inspection criteria.
