MAC 231 CAM: CNC Turning Lecture: 1 Lab: 4 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3 This course introduces Computer Numerical Control graphics programming and concepts for turning center applications. Emphasis is placed on the interaction of menus to develop a shape file in a graphics CAM system and to develop tool path geometry and part geometry. Upon completion, students should be able to develop a job plan using CAM software, including machine selection, tool selection, operational sequence, speed, feed, and cutting depth.
Pre-requisite(s): MAC 121, MEC 110, MAC 141 and MAC 141A (Local) Course is typically offered in Spring. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:
- Create part geometry using a CAD system to save as a data exchange file.
- Create tool path boundaries for turning, abrasive Waterjet machining, and milling.
- Setup machine operations with acceptable feeds and speeds for the given material to a +/-10% tolerance.
- Create a CNC program using a CAM system to save as a Numerical Control (NC) file.
- Create a machined part from the CAMMED NC file.
- Create geometry to produce a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) program that incorporates Live tooling for OD milling and a full “C” axis on a Turning Center.
