SON 111 Sonographic Physics Lecture: 3 Lab: 3 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4 This course introduces ultrasound physical principles, bioeffects, and sonographic instrumentation. Topics include sound wave mechanics, transducers, sonographic equipment, Doppler physics, bioeffects, and safety. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of sound wave mechanics, transducers, sonography equipment, the Doppler effect, bioeffects, and safety.
Course is typically offered in Fall. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Upon completion of the course, students should be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate proper techniques for adjusting key settings on the ultrasound machine.
- Distinguish transducer types, their uses, components, advantages and limitations.
- Describe the principles of soundwave mechanics, soundwave production, soundwave propagation, soundwave interaction with tissue, and the effects of tissue interactions with soundwaves.
- Explain Doppler physics.
- Describe bioeffects on tissue and safety (ALARA Principle).
