CST 150 Building Science

Lecture: 2 Lab: 2 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3

This course introduces concepts and techniques for the design and interaction of the mechanical systems of high performance buildings. Topics include building envelope, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), indoor air quality, lighting, plumbing and electrical. Upon completion, students should be able to understand building systems interaction and performance.

Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to do the following:

  1. Describe the key components and functions of mechanical systems in high-performance buildings, including HVAC, lighting, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  2. Analyze the relationship between the building envelope and mechanical system performance, including its impact on energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality.
  3. Explain the principles of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and their role in maintaining indoor air quality and occupant comfort.
  4. Evaluate the performance of various building systems and their interactions in terms of energy use, sustainability, and occupant health.
  5. Interpret basic mechanical system drawings and specifications to assess system integration within a building project.
  6. Apply concepts of mechanical systems design to propose improvements or optimizations for system efficiency and interaction in high-performance buildings.
  7. Demonstrate how lighting, electrical, and plumbing systems contribute to overall building performance and sustainability goals.
