Lecture: 1 Lab: 4 Clinic: 0 Credits: 3
This course introduces shop safety, hand tools, machine processes, measuring instruments, and the operation of machine shop equipment. Topics include use and care of tools, safety, measuring tools, and the basic setup and operation of common machine tools. Upon completion, students should be able to manufacture simple parts to specified tolerance.

Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, students should be able to do the following:

  1. Demonstrate proper machine shop safety procedures and safe use of hand and power tools.
  2. Measure components using precision instruments (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, etc.) within specified tolerances.
  3. Produce basic parts by setting up and operating common machine tools (lathe, mill, drill press, etc.).
  4. Interpret basic mechanical drawings to apply dimensions and tolerances during fabrication.
  5. Manufacture a simple component that meets required dimensional and surface finish specifications.
