Chemistry is the study of the matter and chemical reactions around you. Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) offers the first two years of chemistry courses and courses in other disciplines such as mathematics and physics for students who want to major or minor in chemistry for a baccalaureate program.

The two-year program listed below is designed to meet the requirements of Associate of Science to be completed and prepare students for Bachelor of Science/Art in Chemistry from regional public and private institutions. Students interested in transferring to four-year college or university after GTCC should consult with the institution they will be attending, their faculty, and/or GTCC Student Success Center to ensure transfer of the appropriate courses for that institution for both General Education or pre-major electives.

Upon successful completion of this degree, graduates will be able to:

  • Employ modern instrumentation and classical laboratory techniques.
  • Apply foundational knowledge learned in chemistry courses in addressing social, economic, and environmental problems to chemists and non-chemists.
  • Apply the scientific method to design, conduct, and interpret experiments.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a collaborative and ethical manner.

1 Recommendations given for transferring institution: UNCG - HIS 111  or HIS 131 , NC A&T - HIS 111  or HIS 112 ; Guilford College, HPU, or ASU - HIS 131 ; UNCC or UNCW - HIS 111 ; UNC-Chapel Hill - HIS 131 .

2 Depending on where students are placed in mathematics sequence, may use general education or pre-major elective to take additional mathematics.

3 Students should take MUS 110  for most institutions or MUS 112  if transferring to UNCW.

For most institutions students may select from ECO 251 , ECO 252 , PSY 150 , POL 120 , or SOC 210 . Students transferring to Guilford College should take ECO 251 , students transferring to UNC-Chapel Hill take PSY 150 , and students transferring to UNCW should take SOC 210 .

5 For most institutions students should take PHI 240 . Students transferring to UNCW is recommended to take ENG 231 . Students transferring to ASU should take ENG 241  or ENG 242 . Students transferring to UNCG should take COM 231 .

6 Students transferring to HPU should take an additions social/behavioral science from the following: ECO 251 , ECO 252 , PSY 150 , POL 120 , or SOC 210 .  Students transferring to UNC-Chapel Hill should take MAT 273 .

7 Students transferring to UNCC should take one of the following courses: HIS 112 , GEO 111, GEO 112, POL 210 , or POL 220 . Students transferring to HPU should take REL 110 , REL 211 , REL 212 , or REL 221 .

8 Students who enter in the mathematics sequence lower than MAT 172  may use these additional hours; however, students will need to have completed MAT 271  before beginning the PHY 251 /PHY 252  sequence. Students transferring to ASU considering Biochemistry track should take BIO 111  and BIO 265  for pre-major electives if sequencing of courses fit in the schedule. For students transferring to UNCG in the Biochemistry track, it is recommended to take the BIO 111  and BIO 112  sequence. For students transferring to UNCC should take MAT 273 . For students transferring to NC A&T, it is recommended that you should take either MAT 273  or BIO 111 . Students transferring to WSSU may elect to take MAT 152  or BIO 111 . Students transferring to UNCW should take BIO 111 .

9 Students transferring to UNC-Chapel Hill should take BIO 111  instead of PHY 251 .
