A 10 10 0 E1
The two-year plan listed below is designed to meet the requirements for an Associate of Arts transfer degree from Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) and prepare a student for obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in the English field at the following schools: North Carolina A&T State University (A&T), Appalachian State University (ASU), University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC-C), University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNC-G), or University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNC-W). Schools noted above have multiple English programs in place. Students should look at the pathways that are articulated online to decide if one of the more specified (programs such as creative writing, professional writing, or education, are more fitting than this more general English pathway). Review the list that follows to see which specific programs are offered at which school.
However, students from GTCC seeking a baccalaureate degree may also transfer to other institutions. These institutions may require different courses within the various areas of General Education. Students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university after GTCC should consult with the institution they will be attending, their faculty advisors, and/or the GTCC Student Success Center.
Upon successful completion of this degree, graduates will be able to:
- Use strategies to acquire new information related to the study of literature.
- Analyze relevant issues presented in the analysis of literature.
- Apply critical thinking in the analysis of literature.
- Apply literary criticism to various texts.

1 NC A&T requires MAT 171 , UNCC specifies MAT 152 , but ASU and UNCG specify only a UGETC math. Note that UNC-W specifies MAT 143 for Creative Writing but MAT 171 for all other English options.
2 Most paths require a minimum of two semesters of a foreign language. NC A&T suggests it be taken in the second year and requires one or two semesters (depending on concentration), while ASU and UNC-G start it in the fall of freshman year and require four semesters. UNC-W’s number of semesters of foreign language depends on graduation date. UNC-C requires two semesters.
3 NC A&T specifies BIO 110 as an option.
4 ASU and UNCG specify ENG 231 or ENG 232 and ENG 241 or ENG 242 both be taken. NC A&T requires all four classes. NC A&T also requires a Philosophy course be taken.
5 NC A&T and UNCG both specify that a communications course be taken. NC A&T suggests COM 110 . UNCG and UNCC requires COM 231 . ASU requires ENG 231 for one of its English concentrations.
6 ASU specifies HUM 160 (Intro to Film) be taken as a degree requirement for one of its concentrations.
7 UNCC specify that one of these history courses (HIS 111, 112, 131, or 132) be taken as a degree requirement. UNCC also specifies PSY 150 as well.
8 Other required hours options include ENG 131 or HUM 110 (required for certain concentrations at NC A&T). ASU suggests ENG 231 or ENG 232 and then ENG 241 or ENG 242 . NC A&T specifies ENG 273 (African-American Literature) be taken as a degree requirement for all but one of its English concentrations.
