SUR 135 Surgical Clinical Practice II

This course provides clinical experience with a variety of perioperative assignments to build skills required for complex perioperative patient care. Emphasis is placed on greater technical skills, critical thinking, speed, efficiency, and autonomy in the operative setting. Upon completion, students should be able to function in the role of an entry-level surgical technologist.

Pre-requisite(s): SUR 122 and SUR 123 .
Co-requisite(s): SUR 134 .
Course is typically offered in Fall.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Utilize critical thinking strategies to secure the appropriate supplies and equipment for the assigned complex case.
Prepare the operating room for identified complex perioperative procedures.
Collaborate with the surgical team for patient positioning, prepping, and draping for complex perioperative procedures.
Pass surgical instruments, sutures, and supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistants appropriate for the assigned case.
Maintain aseptic technique for all perioperative procedures.
Perform the role of surgical technologist with expected speed, efficiency, and autonomy.
