MAC 142 Machining Applications II

Lecture: 2 Lab: 6 Clinic: 0 Credits: 4

This course provides instruction in the wide variety of processes associated with machining. Topics include safety, equipment set-up, holding fixtures, tooling, cutting speeds and depths, metal properties, and proper finishes. Upon completion, students should be able to safely demonstrate advanced machining operations, accurately measure components, and produce accurate components with a proper finish.

Pre-requisite(s): MAC 141, and MAC 141A.
Course is typically offered in Spring.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

Analyze a part print to determine proper work-holding methods.
Perform level II Milling skills using boring and reaming operations on a manual vertical milling machine to a tolerance of =/- .002”.
Perform level II Turning skills of to calculate spindle speeds and feed rates to +/- 5%.
Perform level II machining skills to create part diameters to a tolerance of =/- .010”.
Perform level II turning skills to create shoulder lengths to a tolerance of =/- .010”.
Perform level II machining skills to drill full diameter depths to a tolerance of +/- .010”.
Perform level II Milling skills using slots and shoulders operations on a manual vertical milling machine to a tolerance of =/- .015”.
Perform level II machining skills to locate a part origin for “X” and “Y” axis using an edge finder to a tolerance of +/- .002”.
