SUR 123 Surgical Clinical Practice I

This course provides clinical experience with a variety of perioperative assignments to build upon skills learned in SUR 111. Emphasis is placed on the scrub and circulating roles of the surgical technologist including aseptic technique and basic case preparation for selected surgical procedures. Upon completion, students should be able to prepare, assist with, and dismantle basic surgical cases in both the scrub and circulating roles.

Pre-requisite(s): BIO 163 , SUR 110  and SUR 111 .
Co-requisite(s): SUR 122 .
Course is typically offered in Spring (SUR-123AB) and Summer (SUR-123BB).
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
At the completion of the course, the students should be able to do the following:

  1. Set up the operating room environment including equipment and supplies for assigned or selected surgical procedures to support workflow, ensure optimal case readiness, and comply with procedural standards.
  2. Collaborate with the surgical team to execute pre-operative patient preparation, incorporating aseptic principles and standardized protocols.
  3. Assist surgical team members with draping of an operative site, ensuring maintenance of a sterile field.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in passing surgical instruments, sutures, and supplies to the surgeon and assistants.
  5. Monitor aseptic techniques during all surgical procedures to minimize infection risk and ensure patient safety.
  6. Apply the six rights of medication administration - right patient, drug, dosage, route, time, and documentation - while maintaining sterile technique.
