Associate in Arts to Bachelor of Arts in Communication Pathway

The two-year program listed below is designed to meet the requirements for an Associate of Arts transfer degree from GTCC and prepare a student for obtaining a Bachelor of Science/Arts in Communication Studies at University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina A&T State University, Appalachian State University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, or University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

However, students from GTCC seeking a baccalaureate degree may also transfer to other institutions. These institutions may require different courses within the various areas of General Education. Students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university after GTCC should consult with the institution they will be attending, their faculty advisor, and/or the GTCC Student Success Center.

Upon successful completion of this degree, graduates will be able to:

  • Use communications strategies in multiple situations.
  • Present relevant information in presentations.
  • Analyze interpersonal communications critically in conflict situations.
  • Assess the role of communication in everyday situations.

-If transferring to UNCG, the above schedule is compatible. 

- If transferring to UNCW, take MAT 152.

- If transferring to NC A&T University, take MAT 171 and 172, BIO 110 and HIS 112 or HIS 122, and take only two semesters of a language for BS in Journalism and Mass Communication. You will be required to select a concentration: Multimedia Journalism, Mass Media Production, or Public Relations.

- If transferring to UNC Charlotte, take MAT 152 and three semesters of a language.  You will be required to select a concentration:  Health Communication, Media and Technology, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, or Rhetoric, Culture, and Social Change.  For the specific course variations for each of these concentrations, please see UNCC’s transfer guide.

- If transferring to App State as a Communication Studies concentration, the above schedule is compatible.  Please note Foreign Language is not required but GTCC highly suggests a language.  There are six other concentrations in communication including:  Advertising, Digital Media, Journalism, Electronic Media/Broadcasting, Journalism, and Public Relations.  For the specific course variations for each of these concentrations, please see the ASU transfer guide.

- Guilford College offers only a Communication minor.
