Mathematics includes the study of algebra, probability, statistics, number theory, geometry, trigonometry, Calculus, Differential equations, analytic reasoning and problem solving skills. Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) offers the first two years of mathematics courses and courses in other disciplines for students who want to major or minor in mathematics for a baccalaureate program.

The two-year program listed below is designed to meet the requirements of Associate of Science to be completed and prepare students for Bachelor of Science in mathematics from regional public and private institutions. Students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university after GTCC should consult with the institution they plan to attend, their faculty advisor, and/or GTCC Student Success Center to ensure the transfer of the appropriate courses to that institution for both General Education courses and pre-major electives. The information below pertains to UNCG, NCA&T, Appalachian State University, UNC Charlotte, UNCW, and Guilford College

Upon successful completion of this degree, graduates will be able to:

  • Employ strategies to solve a variety of mathematical problems.
  • Analyze relevant parameters needed to solve real world applications.
  • Apply mathematical concepts and critical thinking skills to solve real world applications.
  • Communicate solutions effectively, using appropriate mathematical language.

Notes:

Recommendations given for transferring institution: UNCG-HIS 111  or 131, NC A&T-HIS 111  or 112; Guilford College, HPU, or ASU-HIS 131 ; UNCC or UNCW-HIS 111 .

2 Students can choose 8 hours of natural sciences from the following list: CHM 151 /152, BIO 111 /112, PHY 151 /152, PHY 251 /252, AST 151 /151A, AST 152 /152A, BIO 110 , GEL 111 , or PHY 110 /110A. Students transferring to NC A&T should take PHY 251 /252 sequence.

3 Depending on where students are placed in mathematics sequence, these hours may be used for general education or pre-major electives to take additional mathmatics.

4 Students should take MUS 110  for most institutions or MUS 112  if transferring to UNCW.

5 For most institutions students may select from ECO 251 , ECO 252 , PSY 150 , POL 120 , or SOC 210 . Students transferring to Guilford College should take ECO 251  and students transferring to UNCW should take SOC 210 .

6 Students transferring to UNCC can also take CSC 134 . For those institutions who do not require Computer Science course, take a General Education elective.  CSC 134   and CSC 151   have a pre-requisite of CSC 120  .

For most institutions students should take PHI 240 . Students transferring to UNCW is recommended to take ENG 231 . Students transferring to ASU should take ENG 241  or 242. Students transferring to UNCG, UNCW, or UNCC should take COM 231 .

8 Students transferring to UNCG should take a Foreign Language or additional General Education/Pre-Major course. Students transferring to UNCW should take MAT 152

9 Students who enter in mathematics sequence lower than MAT 172  may use these additional hours. Students transferring to UNCC should take one of the following courses: HIS 112 , POL 210 , or POL 220 . Students transferring to HPU should take REL 110 , REL 211 , REL 212 , or REL 221 . General Education courses to consider are Foreign Language and/or Physical Education depending on your institution. Students transferring to NC A&T or UNCC should take MAT 152 .

10 Students transferring to UNCW should take Foreign Language or Physical Education course.
